Students at Adam Smith College are benefitting from some of the most up-to-date methods of learning as the College becomes one of the first in the UK to fully embrace the digital era.
Earlier this year Adam Smith became one of the first in the UK to join Apple’s iTunes U initiative, rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s leading universities such as Oxford, Yale and Stanford. Lecturers and students can now access a wide range of teaching materials including videos and blogging areas which can help back up what they are being taught in class.
The tranquil surroundings of the Beauty Salon may not be the first place you would think of when it comes to digital learning but here too students and staff are reaping the rewards.
Christine Laing, Department Manager for Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapies said: “Our students are now much more used to communicating online using computers and mobile phones and so to learn about a treatment such as hot stone massage via an online source is a natural step forward. We also use online videos and video conferencing to talk to other salons within the industry or colleges throughout the world to share ideas, experience and career advice all of which is invaluable to our students.”
Student Lisa Thomson, (31) from Glenrothes, said: “I love learning online in this way as it’s so visual and helps you remember techniques. You can also access the footage from home or via your mobile so you can watch again and again to perfect the treatment.”
Kevin Clark, Project Director for eLearning Innovation and Development, manages the various digital projects at Adam Smith. Kevin said: “The College’s launch on iTunes U also ties in with other eLearning developments including being the first college in the world to have a channel on YouTube’s recently launched education network, EDU. It is vital that education keeps up with the ‘information on demand’ world we are now living in and, at Adam Smith College, we are fortunate to be ahead of the game.”
