The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Local Heroes’ and several students on the Stepping Stones project and who attend Learning Support bases at Adam Smith College, submitted entries in the Special Recognition category.

Three students were successful in reaching the shortlist and were invited to the award ceremony; Beneta Brown Bsc Quantity Surveying, Michelle Christie Stepping Stones and Lesley-Anne O’Neill NQ Hospitality and Events.

There were over 600 entries across Fife and the judge this year was Magi Gibson, a poet and writer. Magi has held three Scottish Arts Council Fellowships and one Royal Literary Fund Fellowship. The certificates were handed out by a true “local hero”; Major John Stuart McDonald PARA from Kelty who has been awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry and ability to inspire those around him in Afghanistan.

Michelle Christie won the overall prize in the Special Recognition adult category and her work was read aloud at the ceremony. Magi Gibson explained that she chose Michelle’s work as she found it warm and it brought a tear to her eye. Michelle’s story was based around Christmas and what this means to children.

Beneta and Lesley-Anne both won special commendations in the same category.

Stepping Stones is a programme for those wish to build confidence with their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. It is possible to study formal qualifications for those intending to access employment or college courses, but lack the entry requirements.
