The group of six local artists were delighted to officially launch their ARTYzan: Fife project recently at a special exhibition which displayed plans and photographs for the new Victoria Hospital at the opening of their new gallery and studio, ‘Emporium’, on Kirkcaldy High Street.
ARTYzan: Fife has been in discussion with NHS Fife Arts Committee and Consort over the past 18 months looking at possible artwork for parts of the new hospital, which will open in February 2012, and have now begun work on this exciting £70,000 project.
The inspiration for the artwork which will be on display are based on two themes; ‘Industry into Art’ and ‘Children and Water’. The ‘industry’ art will be based on the industrial heritage of Fife, looking at paper-making, mining, ceramics, linoleum, linen and agriculture. The ‘Children and Water’ work for the paediatric ward and outpatients will be based on the water theme and will include mosaics, paintings and fun imagery for the walls along with bespoke curtains with a beach hut motif.
Along with Karen, the project group includes Jennifer Brailsford (25), from Glenrothes, Carol Laing (49), from Kinglassie, Sharon Ramsay (20), from Kennoway, Marianne Robertson (21), from Buckhaven and Marie Wilson (48), from Kennoway, who are all post-diploma students from Adam Smith College.
Karen Masters said: “We are all local artists who live and work in Fife and to be involved in this exciting and worthwhile project is fantastic. The range of artwork we hope to create will enhance the environment of the hospital for the patients, staff and the public for many years to come.”
