Gavin Grant, was invited to come along to Adam Smith College by the Business Club, made up of students and staff from the College. Originally from Scotland, Gavin has travelled the globe with his position at head of core governance ownership strategies at Norges Bank Investment Management in Oslo, Norway, which is part of the Norwegian Central Bank.

With over 20 years in the financial services business sector, he spoke to the students about his experiences working all over the world, and the importance of responsible investment and corporate governance in order to run a business carefully and responsibly long term.

The Business Club has been running for over a year and holds monthly events for students studying business courses. It enables them to meet and talk with people working within the business world and encourages them to analyse businesses through an exciting virtual online stock market competition. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) praised the Club for its excellent practice during an inspection of the College earlier this year.

Gavin said: “It’s really useful to be able to come along to colleges and universities to speak to students who are hoping to enter the world of business. It provides a good opportunity to get across key messages such as the importance of responsible investment and corporate governance in sustaining long term business goals.

“Being part of the business sector can provide many opportunities to travel – something that has always been an interest of mine. It has been great to share with the students at Adam Smith College how interesting it is to visit countries throughout the world and compare how businesses are run.”

Christine Sinclair, Executive Director for Business at Adam Smith College, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Gavin to the Business Club event to listen to his advice and learn about the experiences that he has encountered. It was very motivating for the students and will be very useful for them as they prepare for further study and entering employment in the business sector.

“The Business Club events are a great opportunity for our students to meet regularly. It affords them the opportunity to benefit from a wide range of business learning activities which enhances their learning experience and broadens their knowledge.”
