Students battled at Overstenton Park last week for the Fiona Devlin Memorial Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Adam Smith College annual charity football match, raising funds for local charity ‘Love Oliver’.
Students enjoy a great game of football in memory of Fiona and for a very good cause.
The charity football match is held annually by the College to compete for the trophy, named after Fiona Devlin, a former member of staff who sadly died of cancer in 2005.
Battling against the weather as well as each other, the Glenrothes team eventually came out on top winning 9-6. Glenrothes captain, Ben Paterson accepted the trophy on behalf of his team and Lyall Shaw was named as the man of the match.
It was agreed that all those who took part in the match, either by playing, organising or fundraising, were the clear winners as they contributed to raising funds for ‘Love Oliver’. The organisers thanked Glenrothes Strollers for the use of their ground and facilities and HMR Stores, Glenrothes, for supplying refreshments.
This year the group of students and staff from across the College chose to raise money for ‘Love Oliver’; a new local charity in Leven, set up to raise money to help fund research into children's cancers and to support parents who have young children with the disease.
The charity is named after Oliver Gill, who died on Christmas Day 2010 aged just 24 weeks. Oliver was diagnosed with cancer when he was just three-days-old, but giggled and smiled all through his chemotherapy and became an inspiration to all who met him or heard about his struggle. Oliver’s Mum and Dad, Jennifer and Andy, live in Leven.
Mike Devlin, Team Leader for Transport and Mail at Adam Smith College, donated the trophy in 2006 in memory of his late wife Fiona, who was a Learning Assistant at the College. He said: “Fiona was renowned for her commitment and rapport with the students. She was also known for her passion for football and helped me to coach youth football over many years.
“There couldn’t be a better way of remembering Fiona than these charity matches, and she would be delighted that the funds raised are going to such a worthwhile cause."
