HND Events Management students at Adam Smith College joined forces with NC Fashion students recently to co-host a fashion show in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign. Based on the quote, ‘After all, who’s going to do the laundry in space?’, the innovative fashion students took their design inspiration from washing powder packaging to create quirky moon dresses in the style of the1960s.
The collaboration, which saw both sets of students fulfil course requirements, resulted in a unique fashion show held at the Abbey Hotel in Kirkcaldy under the banner, ‘After all, who’s going to do the laundry in space?’. The project title was derived from the quote of a textile designer who believed long-lasting clothes were on the way out and carefree easy to wear outfits were more in vogue.
The students made their ‘moon dresses’ from paper tablecloths and themed their creative designs on packaging from laundry powders, featuring an intriguing take on the catwalk fashion of the ‘60s.
Alix Harvey (17), from Cupar, organised the event with four classmates as part of her HND Events Management course. She said: “As one of our modules in our course we must organise an event as part of a group. Originally we were two separate groups and came together to create Best of Both Worlds Events.
“The idea for the fashion show came as we were aware that the fashion students were not having a catwalk show this year and we thought that it would be an ideal opportunity not only to showcase their talent but our own as well.
“It was quite a challenge bringing our groups together and working closely to ensure a successful event. It has been hard work but we have all really enjoyed this part of the course. We have had great fun planning all the little details and buying the decorations to make the event look as spectacular as possible.”
Also giving their help to the project were the College’s Hair and Beauty students, who kindly helped ensure all models were primed and preened for the event, by giving them funky hairstyles and make-up. The students managed to raise a fantastic £300.70 for the Breast Cancer Campaign, the charity selected by students who were keen to highlight the worthwhile work of the small charity and help raise their profile.
