International students

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

This course is designed to improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. Classes are available from beginner to advanced, and all programmes will run subject to sufficient numbers for a class at each level.

Enrolment age for this course is 16 years and over.

At beginner, intermediate and advanced level students work towards the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) National Qualifications in ESOL.

At intermediate and advanced level, students prepare to sit an internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL examination appropriate to their level:

  • Intermediate 2: First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • Advanced 1: Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
  • Advanced 2: Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

What You Study

Spoken and written communication in English at the above levels with attention to grammar and vocabulary. At intermediate and advanced level, classes may run to prepare students for the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) examination.

Duration and Attendance

  • One Year Full-time or Short Full-time (February – June, 18 contact hours)

Part-time places may be offered subject to availability.

Please note, for students studying short full-time, content may vary

  • Evening programmes are offered on two evenings per week for two hours per evening

Entry Requirements

Every student's level of English will be assessed before starting the course.

Further Study

Depending on your level of English you can apply for:

  • Career-based courses at Adam Smith College
  • Degree courses at Adam Smith College or at British universities

Student Expenses

Students can expect to spend between £80 and £150 on learning material, depending on the level they are studying at. Those taking the Cambridge examinations will have to pay an examination fee of between £100 and £120, depending on the examination they are registered for.
