HNC Early Education and Childcare

Early Years Officer

This HNC will help you become a well qualified, reflective Early Education and Childcare practitioner. Throughout the course you will explore the values and principles underpinning current early years practice. The HNC Early Education and Childcare qualification enables you to register with the SSSC at practitioner level.

Applicants should be aware both the NC and HNC Early Education and Childcare qualifications are required to work within a Fife Council nursery.

Route to Teacher Training

This course has a specific focus on preparing for entry to BEd Primary.

  • Working in an Early Education and Childcare Setting
  • Children and Young People's Rights: Provision, Protection and Participation
  • Theoretical Approaches to Development and Learning
  • Curriculum and Assessment in an Early Education and Childcare Setting
  • Graded Unit 1

Work Experience

Early Years Officer

Placements in nursery and primary 1 or 2 for two days per week and four one-week blocks.

Route to Teacher Training

Students will undertake a placement in a Primary 1–3 then Primary 4–7 class for two days per week and four one-week blocks.

One Year Full-time

Entry Requirements

Early Years Officer

One of the following:

  • SVQ Level 2/3 Early Years Care and Education/Children's Care, Learning and Development
  • NC Early Education and Childcare
  • NQ Education Support Assistance and Standard Grade English at Grade 2 or above
  • PDA Education Support Assistance and Standard Grade English at Grade 2 or above

Route to Teacher Training

  • 2 Highers including English (Grade C or above) and Maths at Intermediate 2 (Grade C or above)

AND

  • Reference to support your application (academic, employer)
  • Students must also be accepted as a PVG scheme member through the College system. Placements cannot be started without this (see Disclosure Scotland for more information about the Protection of Vulnerable Groups)
