HNC Social Care

SCQF Level 7

This is a varied course that includes a work experience placement (full-time students only) which allows you to apply underpinning knowledge to practice.

What You Study

  • Social Care Theory for Practice
  • Social Policy and Social Service Provision
  • 3 SVQ Level 3 Units
  • Sociology for Social Care Practice
  • Psychology for Social Care Practice
  • Protection of Individuals from Harm

Options – choice of 2 subjects from 4 options

Duration and Attendance

One Year Full-time or Two Years Part-time (Evening)

Entry Requirements

One of the following:

  • 1 Higher and 4 Standard Grades at Credit level, with relevant Care experience
  • NQ Social Care/NQ Working with Communities
  • Relevant Care experience or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis

AND

  • Attendance at group information session

Part-time students must be working in an appropriate Care environment.

All students will be asked to give consent for a criminal record check to be carried out by Disclosure Scotland. No placement experience can be organised without a satisfactory report.

Most placements have a minimum age requirement.

Further Study

  • SVQ Care Level 3/4 in Health and Social Care (while working)
  • HND Additional Support Needs
  • Degree/Diploma in Social Work/Community Education/Social Science at university

Career Opportunities

  • Care related services, for example residential schools, day-care facilities for the older adult and resource centres for adults with physical disabilities or learning difficulties
  • Care Home Practitioner
  • Housing Support Worker
