Intermediate 2 and Higher SWAP Access to Humanities

SCQF Level 6

SWAP courses are designed for people who have been out of education for some time. Successful completion can lead students to a guaranteed place on an HNC/D or degree course at college or university in the SWAP-East network. All SWAP students sit internal unit assessments, as well as being assessed on whole course performance at the end of the year, using a graded profile. Most university places are dependent on good grades in this profile.

All course members must successfully complete all the units on the programme and obtain a satisfactory Student Profile from the Curriculum Head.

One Year Full-time

Entry Requirements

SWAP applicants must have been out of full-time education for at least three years. They should also possess one of the following:

  • 4 Standard Grades at Grade 2 or above including English and Maths at Grade 3 or above
  • Evidence of ability to work at level 6 (Higher) in main course subjects
  • Alternative experience or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis

Note: a background of wide reading is an advantage. The level of study is challenging. Good interpersonal and communication skills, excellent time-keeping and attendance are essential.

Further Study

Students can access a wide range of degrees at the University of Abertay, University of Dundee, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art, Heriot-Watt University, Napier University, Queen Margaret University, University of Stirling and University of St Andrews. They may also choose to progress to HNC/D programmes in a Further Education College.

Degree subjects include; Arts and Social Science, Law, Accountancy and Finance, Business Studies, Criminology, Divinity, Economics, Education, Community Education, Social Work, Management, Media and Communication and Urban Studies.
